Chapter Objectives

  1. Identify the speed ratios for a given automobile gearbox.

  2. Determine the number of gears on main, lay shaft, and idler gear shaft.

  3. Work out the number of teeth on various gears to provide the desired speed ratios.

  4. Determine the epicyclic gear trains with number of gears on sun, ring and planetary gears in each gear train.
