Abstract
This introductory chapter, by the editors, highlights fundamental concepts related to machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. To this end, the concept and ecosystem of M2M are introduced, with emphasis on connectivity technologies and data flows. Then, the market opportunity is explored where challenges and opportunities are also highlighted.
