Lower-power wireless mesh networks for machine-to-machine communications using the IEEE802.15.4 standard

T. Watteyne    Dust Networks Product Group, Linear Technology, Union City, CA, USA

Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of low-power mesh technology, often described as the “fingers of the Internet.” The chapter starts with a historical perspective of the decade or so of the development of these networks and the emergence of the IEEE802.15.4 standard. The challenges faced by low-power mesh networks are then highlighted, i.e., reliability and power efficiency. The second part of the chapter looks at the different solutions that have emerged, from single-channel star-network solutions to fully fledged multihop mesh networks. The chapter ...
