Setting Up AppleTalk and TCP/IP
Whether you use Ethernet or AirPort, you will need TCP/IP or AppleTalk to do anything. These are the network transport protocols that enable your Mac to talk to other network devices and to the Internet. Other, more specific protocols work “on top” of the transport protocols. For instance, there are protocols for printing, file sharing, e-mail, and the various other tasks you might do on a network. But these specific protocols are mostly invisible to the user. You need to set TCP/IP; with AppleTalk, you merely turn it on.
