Built-in File Sharing and Web Services
The Mac provides several ways to share files. The traditional file-sharing service in Macs uses the AppleShare-compatible Apple File Protocol (AFP). You go to the Chooser and log in to a Mac or a server, and a network volume mounts on your desktop. In Mac OS X, you use the Connect to Server command in the Go menu.
In early versions of Mac OS, AFP only ran over AppleTalk. In Mac OS 9, AFP file sharing can run over both AppleTalk and TCP/IP. In Mac OS X 10.0 to 10.0.4, AFP file sharing ran only over TCP/IP. Apple restored AFP over AppleTalk with version 10.1 of Mac OS X.
