This chapter might be the most important one in this book. If you don’t understand how to open and save files or how to use the file and folder system, you’ll have a heck of a time finding, opening, or saving files.

Technical Stuff Before I get started, I’ll get a confusing term out of the way. Technically, macOS uses both dialogs and sheets for two-way communication with you. A dialog, as you know, is a window that contains controls for taking actions, such as opening a file. A sheet is simply a dialog that’s attached to a document window’s title bar and can’t be moved independently from the window itself. Some apps use sheets, which prevent you only from using the active window when they appear; other apps use modal dialogs that prevent you from using any open window in the app. Apart from this difference, dialogs and sheets contain the ...
