Chapter 7. Hacking Frames
Expensive frames aren’t necessarily better. They may have more graceful curves, or prettier paint. Some use carbon fiber or another advanced material, thereby justifying the cost, but many are just welded steel. In this chapter, you’ll continue your metal mastery by learning how to hack your own frame. You’ll work on two projects: first, you’ll assemble a frame using new steel tubes and gaskets, as seen in Figure 7-1.
Then, you’ll further use your skills when you “chop” a bike by modifying its frame. There could be a practical reason for this, or maybe you’ll just want to put a nonstandard curve on the tubes to make it look a little cooler. Either way, you’ll learn a lot about working with metal.
