Chapter 6. The Visible Drone

By building the X4Wii, we learned what a difference a flight controller can make. This made me all the more curious to find out what’s going on in there, so in fine maker style, we will build our own! Instead of a single, integrated flight controller, we will build a modular one, combining a standard Arduino-compatible CPU with an accelerometer/gyro module, radios, and a custom motor controller to create our hardware platform.

By upgrading key components from what is integrated in the MicroMWC, we will gain significant functionality—such as altitude hold and heading hold—and still have future expandability. Later, the modular nature of the system will allow us to upgrade to a better barometric pressure sensor if ...
