Dresden, Germany. The night of February 13, 1945. Nearly four thousand tons of high-explosive and incendiary bombs are being dropped by a combined Allied armada of 1,249 heavy bombers. Reduced to 1,600 acres of kindling, the city’s buildings feed a massive firestorm in which Fahrenheit temperatures reach an incredible 2,700 degrees. In the small suburb of Mockritz, five miles away, three teenage women use a shovel to manhandle an unexploded firebomb that has landed on the roof of their home. Together, they manage to coax it off the roof and down onto a septic area, where it detonates, moving one entire side of the house out by a foot.
