22 ROLEX REDUX
The 2016 Rolex Awards were presented during the fortieth-anniversary celebration of the awards November 14–15 in Los Angeles, and Rolex arranged travel for former laureates. During the reception, a sharp-looking gentleman rapidly approached me and introduced himself. He was Dr. Andrew McGonigle, a Scottish physicist turned volcanologist and a reader in the Geography Department at the University of Sheffield. Andrew had received a 2008 award for his pioneering measurements of volcanic emissions using an instrumented drone.
I was surprised when Andrew said I had inspired him to enter the competition. I was equally surprised when he said Rolex would soon begin to fund research by collaborations of two or more laureates.
