6 One-Piece Molds

You’ve Got to Start Somewhere

The simplest type of mold is a one-piece mold, also occasionally referred to as a block mold or box mold. This type of mold is used to replicate small parts that can easily be contained during the molding process.

Easy Version: A Part with a Flat Backside

This first example of a box mold is ideal for use when you need to replicate something with a flat side that has no details. When laid on the side, the piece has to have no significant undercuts where bubbles will be trapped.

An ideal candidate for this kind of reproduction is Hunter’s belt buckle. Let’s begin by taking a look at the prototype in Figure 6-1.
