Water rockets have been around a long time. Small hand-pumped water rockets were a staple when I was a kid. Larger water rockets started to blossom in the 1970s, when soda manufacturers introduced the two-liter plastic soda bottle. Little did they know that they were packaging soda in a model rocket body!

The basic idea is pretty simple. Place a small amount of water in the soda bottle. Turn the bottle upside down, and pump in pressurized air to about 60–75 psi. When the rocket is released, the pressurized air at the top of the bottle pushes the water out quickly, providing ...
