IN OUR WORK WITH INDIVIDUAL MANAGERS AND COMPANIES to build leadership development capabilities, instill corporate cultures that support talent development, and teach managers how to make talent their business, we identified a significant gap between the sincere desire to develop people’s potential and the stark reality that most organizations fall short of their people development goals. This gap was also highlighted in the research we cited in the Introduction. The net conclusion: there are managers in all kinds of organizations with all the right intentions but few of the right skills or tangible support mechanisms to develop staff fully.
