In my childhood sketchbook, there are pages of drawings of faces from the front and in profile. The proportions of the human face are difficult for young artists to get right, and there are tricks to help place the eyes, nose, and mouth in the proper locations. These proportions were something that I had yet to learn, so the pages are visual evidence of trying to work them out for myself. I remember sensing that my drawings didn’t look right at the time, and I wanted to figure out the issue and how to fix it.
