12 WHAT IS MAKING?

The term “making”is so broad as to be undefinable. It is an “empty vessel,” as I once heard Sylvia Libow Martinez describe it at a FabLearn conference. In marketing terms, an empty vessel is a company name with no defined meaning, allowing the brand to be defined in any way the company sees fit.

When I started my Master of Fine Arts program in the painting department, I saw second and third-year painters making 3D and 2D art in all artistic mediums. It became a joke to point at all sorts of art and ask, “Is that painting?” I loved paint and brushes and the process of making images on canvas. I was confident that I would be one of the few who spent my time refining and developing my painting process.
