WHY ARTISTS LOVE MAPS

Maps are in some ways intended to show us truth about where we are, who is next to us, what that terrain might look like, and how to get where we want to go. When artists crumple, cut, paint over, and otherwise change that source of information, are they reinventing reality? Does the map retain the truth it once held? Does it impart this truth to the new form? The artists in this book illustrate both new territories with old maps and the celebration of a cartographic location in a new form. I asked the contributing artists why they use maps.
