Alone on the Sofa: Finding Truth

In the previous chapter, titled “You’re Finished,” I mentioned that, in some way, all profound truths are inherently paradoxical. The example given was, “The only constant is change.” Of course, there are many other well-known paradoxes, such as, “Only by giving to others do we ultimately receive.” Or “The more we know, the more we know we don’t know.” Or “The best way to heal our egos is to practice letting go of the needs of the ego.” These are complex universal truths. If we look carefully, we discover that even truth itself is inherently paradoxical. Simply stated:

Truth itself is absolutely objective, and absolutely subjective.
