Makers are optimistic.
They believe that they can make a difference in the world.
It’s easy to find pessimism. News sites often read like laundry lists of the most horrible things that have happened, are happening, or will happen. A combination of social, economic, medical, and environmental crises presented one right after another have a tendency to make people feel frightened, frustrated, and powerless. Children are introduced early to the scary parts of life. My kindergartner knows what to do if a “bad person with a gun” enters her school thanks to mandatory lockdown drills, and I have to admit that my policy of letting her listen to unlimited NPR broadcasts while on car trips looks, in retrospect, like it was a bad idea. ...
