A Constant Tension Between Nationalist and Islamist Identities

Iranian culture is especially complicated because it is a constant tension between nationalist and Islamic identities. The nationalist aspect of Iranian culture is related to the Ancient Persian civilization and Zoroastrian heritage that date 3000 to 2000 BC but are still prevalent in the society. On the other hand, the Islamic and subsequently Shia aspects are relatively younger and date the 7th and 16th centuries. Historically, the Persian and Islamic elements have been in constant interaction and have evolved together.
