Analogical Reasoning
Analogical reasoning is the act of applying one concept or idea from a particular domain to another domain. The simplest analogy might be something like this: Green is to go as red is to stop. A much more complex analogy that indicates creative genius is Kepler's application of concepts from light to develop a theory of the orbital motion of planets (Gentner, Brem, Ferguson, & Wolff, 1997).
As we saw in the example of microbiology labs, teams are often able to be creative by applying a concept useful in one domain to a new domain.
