The Harvard professor Michael Beer has proposed the following formula for understanding change in an organisation:

Amount of Change = (Dissatisfaction * Model * Process) > Cost of change

The idea is that for any change to happen, the people within an organisation must be so dissatisfied that the perceived rewards of overhauling their existing operating model and processes exceed the nuisance and anxiety of doing so.
