access image see surrogate image.
additive color three colors (red, green, and blue) used in the additive process of color photography. When added together, they produce white. Also called additive primary.
additive primary see additive color.
administrative metadata metadata retained to track the creation and maintenance of digital objects.
albumen the white of an egg, used as a carrier for silver salts in nineteenth-century photographic prints and plates.
aliasing the visual stair-stepping of edges that occurs in images when the resolution is too low.
ambrotype a slightly underexposed collodion wet-plate glass negative displayed in a frame backed by black material.
