The quest for an effective approach to managing software development is as sought after today as the Holy Grail was in medieval times. Just as the grail remained elusive to errant knights, the panacea for the software crisis has yet to be discovered by the software community. We continue to search for our grail in new and improved standards, languages, methods, and tools. In our failure to discover it, we blame people, process, technology, and management. Focus in any single area will not provide the synergy required to help the software community. Only a requisite set of properly coordinated disciplines can lead the crusade on software risk.
