Measuring academic impact
Abstract
Filtering, evaluating, and managing the scientific literature using references cited in scientific papers have led to the creation of the Science Citation Index (SCI). The SCI later became the foundation for new information products such as Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports (JCR), and Essential Science Indicators. A by-product of the SCI called Journal Impact Factor (IF), initially intended to measure the quality of scientific journals, was extrapolated to measure (incorrectly) also the impact of individual researchers’ work.
