EVERYONE LEARNS FROM EXPERIENCE, we say, but alas, we all know people who never seem to. Sometimes we look back and say, “That was a painful experience, but actually it was a good learning experience.” We often mention “learning” and “experience” in the same breath.

A great amount of learning takes place outside of classrooms or formal training environments simply through experience. Many colleges and universities today urge students to have a cooperative education experience, a wilderness challenge experience, or a study abroad experience, and for such experiences the term experiential learning is used.
