1 I should note at this point that all the quotes that open the six chapters of this book plus the appendix are the same ones I used to open the seven chapters of my 1973 book, The Nature of Managerial Work (although not in the same order, except for this one in the last chapter of both books). They seem to work again remarkably well—although I hope not too well in the case of this one.
