Abstract

Costs of previous manned spaceflight programs like Apollo and the Space Shuttle are discussed. Assessment of the general cost of spaceflight measured in terms of payload mass in orbit is carried out. The cost of manned spaceflight is evaluated on a component basis including development, production, flight operations, refurbishment, recovery, and insurance. General characteristics of the cost of various launch vehicle components are described.
