All imaging systems are communication systems and can be analysed using the procedures developed for other types of communication systems. In the previous chapter we introduced and developed one of the most important of these procedures, the analysis of frequency response. In the context of images, this gives us the means of assessing the progress of information carrying spatial signals through an imaging chain.

In common with other communication systems, this signal transfer proceeds against a background of noise.
