Oriented Plastic Films
This chapter reviews the historical displacement of cellophane in flexible packaging applications by oriented films. The physical properties generated by the forces of film orientation made the conversion possible. The complex interaction of thermal and mechanical energy used to orient films is presented in the context of oriented plastics’ intrinsic physical characteristics. Coextrusion has provided an important technique for balancing the properties needed to orient film with the properties needed in the resultant product.
