Metal Cutting and Machining Processes

  • In orthogonal cutting, the cutting edge of the tool is perpendicular to the direction of cutting speed.
  • Material is removed in the form of chips along the shear plane where it is subjected to shear deformation.
  • The chip thickness ratio or cutting ratio, r is expressed as

                        tc = Chip thickness

                        lc = Length of chip

                         l = Length of uncut material

                       Vc = Chip velocity
