Chapter 3. Establishing Your Coordinates
Building a security strategy requires that you forget traditional notions of risk; after all, the least obvious or seemingly minor vulnerabilities are sometimes the greatest. Identify weaknesses and measure those weaknesses in each area of your organization before you start strategic planning. Overlooking this exercise, what I call establishing your coordinates, is foolhardy—just ask American space agency NASA. In January 2004, NASA and its Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) successfully launched and landed the “Spirit” and “Opportunity” rovers on Mars. The spacecraft revived dreamy interest in space exploration, and except for minor technological glitches the journey seemed no more difficult than hobby rocketry. ...
