5. Service Layers

One of the core concepts for the Enterprise Canvas is the notion of layering. We need to be clear, though, as to what type of layering we mean, and what we don’t, because there are at least four different types of layers that are in common use in the business context:
  • Layers of separation (often as “distance-from-self”)

  • Layers of reporting relationships (management hierarchy)

  • Layers of decomposition (fractal structure of services, sub-units, etc.)

  • Layers of realization (from abstract to concrete)
