Introduction

This book has explored the roles, challenges and prospects for market towns that, up to now, have been defined in policy in terms of their size (between 2,000 and 30,000) and their role in servicing a surrounding rural hinterland. There are over 1,000 such towns in England. Market towns have been shown to act as rural employment and service centres, visitor attractions, and key locations for the development of new housing, including affordable housing. Less concretely but no less importantly, they are perceived by many as desirable places to live in and to visit, reflecting their position as an exemplification of the rural idyll.
