People probably overuse the terms machine learning and neural networks when they talk about the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI). But this situation occurs for a good reason: Together, these technologies form the foundation upon which every other AI innovation is built. Understanding how machine learning and neural networks actually work is important because it gives you a framework for how to think about the potential of AI and what it can and can’t do.

In this chapter, I break down machine learning (ML) into simple terms and discuss the process by which machines learn from the data they’re exposed to. I also present neural networks as one method of accomplishing machine learning — by using human brain–inspired algorithms to recognize patterns in data.
