Understanding Excel Errors

Chapter 16 describes the functions you can use to trap errors that Excel returns. However, you can accidentally create errors that may not be apparent. This chapter describes errors that can occur and techniques you can use to find errors.

Mismatched Parentheses

Every left parenthesis must have a corresponding right parenthesis. If you try to enter a formula and you do not match all parentheses, Excel usually displays a message telling you that your formula is missing a parenthesis, and you typically need to correct the error to store the formula. However, under some circumstances, Excel corrects the error for you. For example, if you type

=SUM(C1:C10

and press Enter, forgetting ...
