Material Considerations

This book focuses on 3D printers that feed filament into an extruder, which melts the filament and lays it down a layer at a time. Filament is a thick thread made of a variety of materials such as plastics, nylon, and elastomers, typically in one-kilogram (plastic) or one-pound (nylon) spools. Figure 7-1 shows a one-pound nylon spool and a one-kilogram spool of polylactic acid (PLA) plastic.
