Building a Shelf Using Formulas and Type Catalogs

The real challenge in modeling in 3D is being able to predict and elegantly maintain change and iteration. Once you're able to do this, you really start to work effectively.

To get to this point, you need to understand nesting, family types, formulas, and type catalogs, and in the following sections, we'll walk you through an exercise that includes these techniques. Specifically, you'll build a simple shelf. A shelf is something we're all familiar with, and designing a shelf that elegantly changes with your design is a wonderful thing.
