With acrobatic movements and a voice like a squeaky gate, the courting male Yellow-headed Blackbird is so preoccupied with enticing females to his territory that he ignores me standing barely thirty feet away, equally engrossed with capturing his every move. My professional digital camera focuses fast and accurately, firing off 10 frames per second. Viewed through my top-notch 500mm lens, the bird fills the frame. While I’m glad to have professional gear, I know that far more than equipment goes into obtaining stellar images. The camera and lens are simply my basic tools.
