Chapter 5

SEEING THE LIGHT

Lying on my belly on the lakeshore, I fidget in frustration, mentally pleading with the family of Eared Grebes framed in my viewfinder to swim a little faster toward me. The early morning light is perfect but the grebes are too far away even for my long lens. They stay at the far side of the mats of algae floating offshore where they’re finding plenty of prey to feed their young.

Normally, I wouldn’t be so impatient but I keep hearing rumbles of thunder and a dark veil of storm clouds is heading toward me from across the lake. Will the grebes come within range before the storm hits?

At last the grebes are close enough for a pleasing image size, but now the clouds are racing across the sun and the water is blue-black. ...
