Chapter 9
BEAUTY CLOSE TO HOME
Long ago, I planted a small tree—an eastern redbud barely five feet tall with a few spindly branches. It marked the beginning of landscaping my backyard for bird photography. Every spring since then I’ve photographed the birds that perch among the redbud’s flowers en route to the bird feeders I’ve placed nearby—goldfinches, grosbeaks, orioles, hummingbirds, and cardinals making a lavish spread of color. But the best surprise happened only once: I captured a brilliant blue Indigo Bunting in a perfect flower-framed spot. Many times its original size now, the redbud still blooms profusely each spring, and the birds captured among its blossoms have appeared in calendars and magazines too numerous to count!
