Chapter 5. Indirect Illumination and Final Gather
Indirect illumination is the bounced light within an environment. In the real world, it accounts for as much of the illumination you see, and simulating its effect is essential to creating realistic and compelling renderings. Producing indirect illumination in your renderings is a straightforward task with mental ray using the first indirect illumination tool that I cover, Final Gather. Final Gather was originally created as a cleanup tool for another indirect illumination effect, Global Illumination, and helped to reduce noise and smooth the illumination. However, over time, Final Gather has become a fast and useful stand-alone tool that is well suited for most scenes.
