11.2. Enabling the Remote Desktop Services Role

The first step in setting up a Remote Desktop Services environment is to enable the RDS role. This should be done on a domain-joined Windows Server 2008 R2 server. Joining the server to a domain will allow much greater control of the server through Group Policy and much more flexibility when dealing with users and groups for determining access. The server on which RDS is enabled is known as a Remote Desktop Session Host, or RD Session Host. Log on to the server that is going to be your RD Session Host as a user with local administrator privileges.
