The z-test

The z-test is appropriate under the following conditions:

  • The study involves a single sample mean and the parameters µ and of the null hypothesis population are known
  • The sampling distribution of the mean is normally distributed
  • The size of the sample is N ≥ 30

We use the z-test when the mean of the population is known. In the z-test, we ask the question of whether the population mean, µ, is different from a hypothesized value. The null hypothesis in the case of the z-test is as follows:
