Human Resources (HR) has been for a long time considered a cost centre. In the old days, it did ‘pay and parties’, and even now a lot of its time is spent sorting out various internal imbroglios and keeping the firm out of the court and papers. This is changing as the role of the HR Department is becoming more about managing people. It is now there to support the firm’s business long-term goals and concerns itself with the longer-term people issues, matching resources to future needs and looking at structure, quality, culture, values and commitment.
