PowerShell was introduced by Microsoft in 2006 as the long-term plan to unify various scripting languages. It is a framework built on and integrated with the .NET Framework and consists of a command-line shell and scripting environment. The first product to take advantage of PowerShell natively was Exchange 2007, and the scope has grown dramatically since then to include almost the entire Microsoft collection of server and system administration products: Windows Server, SQL Server, System Center Suite, Windows Compute Cluster Server, SharePoint, Lync Server, and now also Skype for Business 2015.
