Configuration items are the pieces of the configuration baseline that, when assembled, will complete the puzzle and allow you to monitor configuration drift from what you have specified. To demonstrate the processes of creating configuration items and a configuration baseline, we'll use a utility called NightWatchman, described in the accompanying sidebar. Because there are so many ways to configure this product and to use it, you will be using it throughout this chapter so you can gain a better understanding of DCM and take these examples and apply them to any product you choose.
