Programming the Office 2007 Ribbon

The single most significant change to the Office 2007 user interface is the replacement of traditional menus and toolbars with the new Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).

The QAT — which is similar to traditional toolbars — is easily modified by the user, simply by pressing Alt+F, I and then clicking the Customize button in the left pane to open a dialog box where buttons can be added, modified, or removed from the QAT.

The Ribbon, however, cannot be customized by the user via the Office 2007 user interface. (Microsoft calls it the Office fluent Ribbon, after the Office fluent user interface. But nobody else seems to use this terminology.)
