Although VMware ESX and VMware ESXi have a lot of components in common, there is one key component that differs between the two of them, especially with regard to security. The presence of the Linux-based Service Console in VMware ESX introduces a number of security challenges not present in VMware ESXi. Because of this key difference with regard to security, most of the information in this section applies only to VMware ESX.
