13.2. Securing ESX/ESXi Hosts

Although VMware ESX and VMware ESXi have a lot of components in common, there is one key component that differs between the two of them, especially with regard to security. The presence of the Linux-based Service Console in VMware ESX introduces a number of security challenges not present in VMware ESXi. Because of this key difference with regard to security, most of the information in this section applies only to VMware ESX. The "Securing ESXi Hosts" section later in this chapter specifically discusses VMware ESXi.
