Preparing for capacity planning

Here are some questions that can get you started with your capacity planning discussion:

  • Is your focus today on demand, allocation, or both?
  • Do you overallocate the following resources on your host systems and virtual machines?
    • CPU
    • Memory
    • Storage
  • If you do overallocate resources, by what percentage do you overallocate them?
  • Do you use VMware vSphere High Availability?
    • If so, what percentage of hardware have you reserved for High Availability?
    • Do you use a buffer?
  • Where do you place your workload types?
    • Are production workloads in their own clusters?
    • Are test/development workloads in their own clusters?
