14.2. Preparing for the Migration: What do I Need in Place?

The first thing to do is to check that you meet the minimum requirements for hardware and software. The requirements for the previous version of SharePoint were not as high as the requirements for SharePoint 3.0. Your basic requirements are as follows:

  • CPU: 2.5 GHZ

  • Memory: 1GB

  • Drive Space: 3GB

  • Monitor: 1024 × 768

  • Network Speed: 56K

  • A DVD drive

These, of course, are the minimum requirements and aren't really adequate as an actual production box. If you intend to deploy a standalone server, the recommended specs are as follows:

  • CPU: 2 processors at 3 GHZ

  • Memory: 2GB

  • Drive space: 3GB plus enough space to hold the sites you intend to host

  • Network Speed: 56K (preferably higher)
